Z Central Station Z CD Challenge! was created by soccrdad30
Back in 2009 Z Central Station had a cool Peanut Butter Lid Challenge Contest. Now in 2012, Z Central Station presents the Z CD Challenge Contest! The rules are very simple, you need to use a CD or DVD disc as a base, and create a mini-display on it. Remember your work must be in Z scale. The contest starts Tuesday November 1st, 2011 and finishes on noon PST, Sunday January 8th, 2012. This should give everyone plenty of time to get through the holidays.
There will be prizes for the top three entries, and please submit three photos of your entry. On December 1st, 2011 I will create and open the Official Z CD Challenge thread for your entries.
If you are one of the modelers that does not like to participate in contests... build one anyways, submit some photos and help inspire others.
And as always, good luck and have fun!
John

While I'm not one to enter contests normally I just might see if I can't rustle up something presentable by new years

John-- Maybe a link to the previous lid contest entries might be helpful. This was a fun contest as it was wide open- anything goes as long as it is Z. And after the contest, many of the entries could be used on modules.

Prize updates! Or actually two prize updates, I am working on the final prize. Three prizes for the Z CD Challenge will be offered. The 1st place winner (with the most votes) will get first selection of the three prizes, then 2nd place finisher (with the second most votes) will get second choice of prizes, then the left-over prize is awarded to the third place winner.
Here are two of the prizes waiting to be won, and I am working on the third prize. I wish to thank Alex Bercq and Rob Kluz for the prize donations, these are both beautiful prizes.
Good luck to the contestants!
John
Update! The Third prize package is now in place. The third prize package includes a bi-plane, waterline craft with trailer, trackside box, vending machines, 20' box truck, 25' box truck tanker truck, Impala, and gas station accessories.

Say, can people use the protective clear circle of plastic that comes on top of a stack of CDs when purchased in bulk? It's exactly the same size around (and thickness too) as a CD and a good CD doesn't need to be wasted that way.

Joe, yes you can use the clear plastic cd if you want. They are the same size and shape as a CD or DVD disc.

Kelley!!! You rambunctious whippersnapper you!!!
Far be it from me from stopping you, I say go for it. I see you had two entries in the 2009 PBL contest. I am still working on the roof of my farm house laser kit, and I cut some foam for my CD. I still have a ways to go, but should be done with my CD Challenge.
Good Luck!!

I've uploaded the 3 photos of my entry to the contest gallery.
I decided to go seasonal with my entry as this is the only way I can get some Z in the living room for a few weeks a year.
It features the obligatory snow covered landscape (because I like snow covered landscapes) and a scratch built 'Christmas stable' (I don't know what they are actually called in English so the literal translation will have to do) which is a traditional christmas decoration in most homes² and town squares here in Belgium.
The stable itself is scratchbuilt, the beams my usual 1mm thick wooden rods and the planks are made of that thin wood you sometimes find with more expensive cigars.
The straw covering is painted static grass while the crib is a small block of balsa wood.
The baby is just a painted piece of .25mm thick steel rod
Unfortunately I'm not skilled enough to modify the Preiser figures hence the rather unconventional dress of Joseph and Mary.
Trees are handmade offcourse and the base is a single piece of foam sculpted by dremel.
Oh and if you look carefully there's an actual CD under there too.
²: though I'm betting noone else in the neighbourhood has a 1/220 scale version

Looks great Kurt. Here in the States we call the structure itself a stable too. What you called the crib is, according to legend, a manger, (the baby Jesus was born in a stable and, in lieu of a crib, placed in the manger). [According to Wikipedia; A manger is a trough or box of carved stone or wood construction used to hold food for animals (as in a stable).]
In the states, and I assume elsewhere as well, we call the scene the Nativity. And when referring to the structure of the stable, we here just tend to just call the whole thing “the manger”. If you notice how the structures are built in most of these scenes, they seem very little like an actual stable, and more like a windscreen set up around a manger for the animals to eat. I think we Americans, reminiscent of old Victorian ways, tend to shy away from the word stable as it might remind one more of animals and waste. Manger seems a bit cleaner.

Blending today’s surroundings with what we can actually see on the album cover shows the amount of research you put into this project. You show things that aren’t readily apparent when examining the album cover… you have the crosswalk markers in place (those yellow balls on poles) and the streetlight, all of the brickwork, the footpaths to the buildings, and you even have the color of the hedges correct. Simply Amazing!

Kelley, I’ve held off on commenting on this (after our first conversation), but I have to tell you this thing is terrific. You even have the VW bug in there just like on the album cover and even the license plate is the correct color. It’s a GREAT rendition right down to John’s beard and Paul’s bare feet.Kelley wrote: If sun shines I will snap photos this weekend
