I will shamelessly toot my own horn:

www.shapeways.com/shops/zscaletracks (for things that shapeways consistently prints)

www.sculpteo.com/en/s/z-scale-tracks-odds-and-ends/ (for things that I had to move from shapeways because they would not print the designs consistently)

Very helpful, thanks!

Question: Why are products listed when they are not for sale? Are they future products, products not approved by Shapeways, or something else? Just wondering.

Pete,
Not all people put them up for sale! Items they use for them self. As for me I don't like putting them up for sale till I have had them Print without trouble unless some one asked and they try on there own and for some reason they don't pass then I will receive a message from Shapeways to fix what ever the problem my be if I can. I guess there is other reasons but that is mine. like the switch tower wasn't up for sale till today when I received the printed one from shapeways no problem pass the first time. so now i's for sale. some of mine are to big like the large bridge I have. I need to break it down into two units so it can be printed.

Thanks, Walt!

I've seen some items that I wanted, but never thought of contacting the creator and asking if it might be printed for me. I understand only some of the constraints of the Shapeways business.

Pete,
Another Answer is we have to pay to even to find out if it will print! and some project cost is up ther so unless you really need to you will probley wait on that one. They just don't print them first. but you don't loose any money unless you have several item on the order and maybe one doesn't pass then you have to fix and reorder and spend the shipping price on the order because they don't put it back in the order again! It would be nice if they gave you a time period to complete fix and put it back with the order. even if it made an extra day on shipping, I could work with that and talking to them about it you get the same answers. so it gets you no where.

Sometimes items are not for sale because the first print was completed w/o problem, and then when a customer ordered it shapeways would refuse to print...

I just experienced this. It's rather confusing: good for the designer, but not for the customer? Howzzat?

GNFan,
In that case sometimes the customer orders it in another material that the designer had it made for! I use Fud for most all my projects. I fine it come out nicely for details. But lately the project are coming out with problem. My Switch tower had a few details in it siding, brick, drains, And the back side had print marks and mess the detail up. I have also found that I had ordered something and it came out great so ordered it again and it failed. The only thing I could think of is there trying to put too many projects in one print to keep up with the purchases. Just like all products today not as good as years ago when they took time to make a project Now there cheaply made and cost a lot. I was wondering why the Z scale products cost so much and they are so small and a lot less material then the other scale.
So there are no answer except for those who work there and know the truth. No one project comes out the same each time because it put in a different way each time.

It seems the business model is not quite as smooth as Shapeways would like me to think. I'm not interested in anything larger than N scale.

The fact that i cannot guarantee consistency between prints, forced me to move some of the models to Sculpteo. At least there they say that if diameter or thickness is greater than 0.5 mm it will print. Although in defense of Shapeways they have now a design check that highlights too thin walls, so perhaps there is hope...

Kmalkowski,
I've tried the fix thin wall and then looked at the project again, it fixes the thin wall but the drawing is distorted where it repaired so I just when back to my drawing and fixed the areas that said thin walls because I didn't like the repair look! I've been it at a year now and still see some problems. But there isn't much to do about it I messaged them about broken pieces that there wasn't any part in the bag and they are packed it good the last piece I got was the ST Villiers Switch Tower and part of the antenna was broken and that was the only problem but I can live with that. They say that several people handle the material be fore it packed. the tower was taped to a piece of cardboard and placed in a bag and then anther bag and the antenna part wasn't there. and I have been using FUD so the min. is 0.6mm. but that the only material it will work all other has to be bigger to print. The fix thin wall might work but I just don't like the way it looks after repair so I just go back to the drawing board! but I can use the tool to see the thin walls while I open my drawing and fix it while I'm looking at the thin wall shot!

Alert: there are 10 types of people in the world. Those who can write software, and those who don't.

If you don't understand the joke above, then this aticle is NOT for you <grin>

Here's a great writeup explaining why doing some things in software are harder than you might think:

Nice Write up ! But the feed back I guess I should have produced the repaired photo to show the difference on what it look like. I'm not putting down Shapeways or anyone else. I still order from them a lot! But I do comment on things I can see with my own eyes that other may not see. We all have our faults and nothing is always perfect but most people strive to do there best with what they have and some of us might not be able to write software or understand it but for those who do we try to help to understand the problems that the software may have by using and testing the out come and letting them know there still might be problems. computer are always changing and getting better all the time. I also think that in time they will change even the 3D printing issues. Making the process better. I thank stony for the help he has given with his experience with the 3D drawing.
