What's the difference between these two classes? Has Marklin ever made a model of the 218?

Gary, The main difference between these locos is weight and hp. The BR 216 weighed around 74 tons and had 1500-1600 hp. The BR 216 weighed in at 76.6 tons and has between 2500-2800 hp. Marklin, to the best of my knowledge, only made the BR 216 in Z scale. Cheers, Jim CCRR:)

Gary, main diffrence, apart from power is 216 was coming with a steam generator for heating coaches, 218 got electrical heating equipment. 218 is also 400mm longer.

Thanks Gerd and Jim. 400 mm in Z scale is 1.8 mm, so it looks as if the differences are barely discernible to the naked eye. Especially an eye located in a head at the edge of the layout. If I want to have a Br 218 on my layout it looks like I'll have to buy a 216 (8875) and pretend it's a 218.
Mind you, I'm not a big fan of all that V 200 family, but I did travel behind 218s between Hamburg and Lubeck, so it's sentimental

I like these loks a lot, and the chassis is a good base for Czech diesels.

Not yet, but I am about halfway finished with one on this chassis we have been discussing. I need to trace the panels and start a second one, probably to be a dummy, before proceeding. Many locos in the turntable = good

BTW the exhaust stacks and their position are different too, but it's not so important if you don't count every rivet
