DCCing New MTL SD40-2 was created by craZ13
I was just curious if Micro Trains changed the chasis on the SD40-2, when they changed manufacturers, to accomadate the drop in TCS MZA4 decoder. MTL indicated the original chasis design was to be like the Geeps but was changed by the previous manufacturer.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone that has put decoders in any of the new run, as my Canadian National SD40-2s are finally available.
Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry,
The chassis are the same from what I can tell. I DCC'd both of the CSX that I got and they appear the same. Go to the TCS website and look under instructions. I did this method with the 2nd one this morning and it really made it easy. No more hand filing. I had the 2nd unit done in about 20 minutes. Really wish I would have checked before I finished the 1st one.
Hope this helps.

I have not seen any changes to the SD-40 chassis. It does NOT have the same posts as the GP's do, the notches face each other which means the board CANNOT drop in, unlike the Digitrax on the GP's forward-facing notches.
TCS's website (tinyurl.com/TCS-Z-install) clearly shows THEIR method to install the board (updated version from a year ago where they showed the posts severly modified). HOWEVER, their method requires you to separate the frame halves or at least siginficantly open the upper section, both of which will require you to reposition those STUPID worm gear plastic bushings!
I propose an method so you only need to slightly loosen the frame: You need a rotary tool to grind off most of the upper flat part of the notch. Leave the entire outer vertical section and a little of the upper flat (like a minimal upper capture surface). Lift out the old board, install the TCS board and LIGHTLY (this means two kids figer tips lightly) retighten the chassis screws. Do NOT fist tight MTL screws !
